Dave has spent his business career working with a diverse array of hi-tech businesses in the Physical and Life Sciences sectors and has gained broad experience Commercialisation, Business, Technology, and Intellectual Property strategy. Dave held the roles of CTO at EKF Diagnostics and General Manager of its Irish Subsidiary, Argutus Medical, in which he was responsible for coordination and direction of the company’s R&D strategy across several subsidiaries and ensuring the R&D outputs aligned to the Commercial and Marketing strategy of the business. In this role he had responsibility for assessment and selection of new product and technology opportunities and developing the business cases for these, resulting in the initiation of several new product introductions.
As Vice-President of Fund Strategy at Intellectual Ventures’ Fund 3, Dave was responsible for directing a team of Commercial and Technical professionals to execute the fund’s Investment Plan, deploying over $300 million in capital to build the business’ patent portfolio across several industry sectors. The plan involved identifying high quality acquisition opportunities and aligning these to the fund’s client engagement process that yielded over $100 million in contracted licensing revenue.
Dave is an inventor on over 70 patents, principally from his time at NTERA, a UCD Nanotechnology spin-out in which he was founder and CEO. At NTERA, Dave built the business and guided several successful commercial and licensing programmes in addition to being a key figure in raising over $40 million in private capital. With a PhD in Chemistry and an MBA from the UCD Smurfit School of Business, Dave is passionate about seeing the potential of excellent research being brought to commercial application and is particularly keen to help Life Science opportunities meet their true potential. Most recently, Dave has been working as an independent consultant with academics, start-ups and SMEs supporting their commercialisation strategies.
